Bharatpur is Medical Hub of Nepal. Most of the people living in Bharatpur have migrated from different places of Nepal. Research has shown that people living in fast growing city has co-relation with diabetes and hypertension due to sedentary life style, fooding habit, stress etc. So we decided to conduct project at Chitwan to access true status of diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Hypertension is a term used to describe high blood pressure.

Hypertension is also called a silent killer as it is usually without symptoms. Raised blood pressure currently causes approximately 9.4 million deaths each year worldwide and this figure is expected to rise, given an expanding and ageing global population. Diabetes is emerging as a formidable killer. According to the WHO, there is no exact data of patients with diabetes in Nepal. But, the 2016 Diabetes Profile has shown that 9.1 percent Nepali population are living with diabetes.

Realizing the need to implement the above program in Bharatpur Metropolitan City after doing research and action work there and in other parts of the country also, NPL-SWO conducted its activities step by step which are as follows: –

• Analysis of the health situation of the program area.
• Visited Public Health Department, Health Posts and concerned people and discussed and shared our related programs and activities and their supports.
• Presented our proposal to the Mayor Mrs. Renu Dahal and discussed and shared about our program and their support.
• Deciding to start our program from Ward no 1, we had an interaction with Ward Chairmen, Secretary, its members and Female Community Health Volunteers.
• This program aims to mobilize local resources – Female Community Health Volunteers, local health facilities and Doctors, other health technical person, the local government and beneficiaries.

Methods

A cross-sectional observational study using a modified standard questionnaire was conducted among 5045 population of age 18-75 at Bharatpur ward no -9 Chitwan Nepal. Data was objectively analyzed in SPSS full version 21. Chi-square test.

Results

Mean SD age of the responded was 40.4± 15.7. Overall majority of respondent were female with 58.8%, out of total population 21% of population were suffering from hypertension were as 14% were suffering from diabetes. 23% of them were obese where as 37% of them were overweight. Majority of population 84.5% were Hindu. Majority of survey population were of Brahmin ethnicity with 52.8%. Most of the responded were age 30 and bellow with majority of (32.7%). But majority of people suffering from hypertension and diabetes were people of age (45-75). Prevalence of diabetes is seen higher in Dalit people than people of other caste.

Conclusion

This study reports that the obesity and overweight is a common problem in ward number 9, people with more weight have more ratio of diabetes and hypertension. Hypertension and diabetes is seen more in middle age adult and senior adult of age 45-75 hence we can conclude that obesity and age are influencing factor for diabetes and hypertension plus we also found that hypertension was seen in retired army officers who left their physically active life and are living a sedentary lifestyle, which also concludes that lack of physical activities also contributes in the causation of hypertension and diabetes. Diabetes is seen more than the expected level. Hypertension and diabetes are at an alarming rate despite the majority being literate people.
